Today my dad & I were on our way to Amarillo, Texas when we saw the Cadillac Ranch. It was a huge farm with five Cadillacs buried into the ground.

They looked like classic 1987s so we went to check them out. They had been there for a long time.. You could tell by the way they had rotted and fell apart.

Other people who were also looking at the awkward attraction had brought spray cans to paint the cars with. When they were done with them they’d just toss them on to the ground and leave.

A family that was leaving had given us a can of spray paint because they thought that they were going to use it but they didn’t. I was as happy as a homeless guy who won the lottery. I immediately got to spraying. I had spray painted my name onto the car so that everyone who walked by would see it.

I got so good at it that I drew Biggie Smalls and 2Pac with a cigarette in his mouth. I guess that it just came to me instantly.

I was going to draw Michael Jackson but I just couldn’t seem to draw all of his face lifts so I just settled for Gary Coleman.

He was so easy to draw that I even did his whole body. Although, it wasn’t any larger than 2Pac’s cigarette but the drawing was smaller than Biggie’s upper lip. That was everything that I did worth writing about today.

Today my dad and I spent the day on the road yet again. Only today was a little less grueling than yesterday.

We got to see the Grand Canyon! It had giant rock formations that were more than ten stories tall! If you look around you’d see that it was pretty much a huge bowl full of rocks and sand.

We even got a chance to ride on horse back all the way into the Grand Canyon . The weirdest things lived down there. I could have sworn that I saw a man sized mosquito sucking every last ounce of blood out of a full grown mule! When it was finished it looked at me hungrily. I told the tour director what I had seen. She said that they were once regular flies that lived near a toxic waste dump. They were dying out because almost no animals dared come near the sea of toxic debris for it was known to transform anything that came near it into an unspeakable monster. As a last resort, the flies suck the toxic waste. They had soon became giant mosquitos with a powerful thirst for blood. So they set off to the toxic waste factory. As soon as they arrived the workers knew that they had created the monsters they saw before them. When monster mosquitos were done, only the skins of the workers remained. That didn’t satisfy them but they needed a large, dry, and rock surrounding. Therefore, they wondered into the Grand Canyon. We hurried back up the way we came so that nothing would attack us.

We arrived at the leaving point safely. After that, I wanted go but my dad wanted to listen to some crappy air quality presentation which took about half an hour.

The rest of the day was just straight rode. At least until we got to the motel. It was infested with every kind of bug. When I went to sleep it felt like I was inside of a beetle’s mouth.

That about does it for today.

Today my dad and I are going back home to Georgia!

Although unlike any other trip back home, we are driving cross-country. The trip takes about three days and while you drive you see many land marks and stuff that you wouldn’t see if you never drive out of the state.

I was so excited to go back home, I could hardly stand still let alone go to sleep. But somehow I closed my eyes and dosed off as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Before we left that morning we had to get a few snacks to keep awake while on the road. So we got some gatorade, honey roasted peanuts, and just about every other type of candy known to man kind and several known to dolphins. After we were locked and loaded we left for Georgia.

My dad said that I needed to learn how to read a map and that this road trip would be the perfect moment for that. He told me the some of basic ways to read a map. He also had a GPS in the truck so I didn’t know why he needed me to tell him the directions that the gas stations and nearby hotels were. But I told him any way because I thought that he was just trying to get me to learn or something.

We passed about eight cities and three states. Just about all of them had at least 1 thing special about them and my dad and I took a photo of every last one of them.

My dad always has some type of Jack In The Box logo on his antenna. And when ever one got so old and jacked up that it was practically falling apart , he’d stop by Jack In The Box to get a new one. As a matter of fact, when ever we took a picture of some type of flag or something we would make sure to make it look as though the Jack In The Box head was right next to it.

We rode three-hundred and eighty-three miles! Although, we still have such a long way to, it’s just unreal!

This week my dad and I had to texture and paint someone’s condo. The texturing was the hard part though. The first day we went to work over there, I didn’t know what to expect. I actually thought that it would be easy. As soon as we started to prepare to spray , I knew that I was in for a rude awakening.

We had to pack the truck with all types of tools. That alone took about three hours to do. Then, we had to go to Home Depot to get even more supplies to take with us on our trip to the condo. So we got more things and somehow managed to stuff them into the truck.

We grabbed something to eat on the way and arrived at the condo in a matter of minutes. My dad and I got to work as quickly as possible.

By the time we were done it was about 10:00 P.M.. So we went home to rest. The next day we started the whole process over. We did that all week and we’re still not done! The only thing I like about working at the condo is we got to swim in the pool.

Attempting to keep from melting in Mojave, Calif.

It’s HOT—HOT—HOT!!

I’m in the city of Mojave, California this week working. It’s Thursday, we’ve been here since Sunday Evening. Since it’s a little more than 100 miles to drive here I usually stay for at least a week because it doesn’t make sense to drive that far to get home each day.

There is usually enough work to last a week so it works out. I’m out here doing handyman, home maintenance, home repair……………. in other words “I fix, repair, and build stuff”.

This week we removed the sheathing from an out-building for the owners across the street from where I’m staying. It was nearly falling off and the contents would have been exposed to the elements.

We’ve worked at this property before. The last time, we built a car port so the owners could park their car in shade, because if the temp. outside of the car is 100 degrees; the temp inside the car would be about 200 or so degrees when they opened the doors.

Because it’s very windy here we had to really anchor it down really well or it would get blown away. As a result it was a very beefy structure, built to withstand the strongest winds the desert serves up.

Since that job went so well we were hired to take care of the out-building. That was not a very hard job because it was just removing the rotting plywood, shoring up the framing and correcting a few things around the foundation.

Since the temp. has reached 118 degrees this week we’ve had to start really early in the morning. (Not too early because we didn’t want to wake everyone in the neighborhood with the sounds of power tools.) I’m surprised at how far sounds travels out here.

We’d get started around 7:00 A.M. and end our day any where from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. By that time it’s really too hot to be outside. We were only able to work that late because the sun would move around the build so that we’d have partial shade on two sides of the build, and hopefully those were the two sides of the build we were working on.

Since our days end early it’s take a bit longer to complete a job, but today we put the finishing touches on the building and moved on to yet another neighbors’ house where we’re putting together a gazebo in his yard. In addition to that we have to install a security door.

Once that’s over it’ll be Friday evening and the work here in the desert will be over and we’ll be heading back home to start on yet another project.

Some of you reading this blog know me as a professional photographer are probably wondering why I’m here in the desert building things?

Well, it’s quite simple.

I’ve always enjoyed building and repairing things around the house. It’s been that way since I was in Jr. high school. I never really considered doing it to make money since I was into photography at such an early age, but since I’ve gotten older and I’ve had to do these things around my house I’ve gained more experience and knowledge in that area.

One of the biggest reasons though is the fact that I have a good friend that I grew up with here in southern calif. that’s a contractor by trade, he allowed me to help him on a few jobs.

While he cussed, fussed and generally talked krazy to me while I worked with him; he showed me the proper way to do things; I was able to get better. If I hadn’t known him since we were 12 years old I would not have been able to stick it out. It was kinda like “Construction BootCamp” where all the things said to me were said (Mostly) to make me better and to think about the task at hand, providing I was able to stick it out and learn something.

During that time and afterwards I used the secrets I stole from him to get little jobs on my own and use around my house to do repairs.

Since that time a few years ago, I’ve added that to my “List of things I can do to make money, and have a good time in the process.”

That association led to another friend asking to help out while they found a replacement for one of their guys that no longer worked with them. That worked out well also, which is what led to me being hired out here in Mojave. It was always understood that photography was first on my list of things to do, but when photography was slow I would pick up this type of work so I would not go crazy when I was not doing photography.

I’ve grown to like this type of work so much that I enjoy it as much as photography. In fact, I’m now really interested in getting back to doing the type of photography I want to do as opposed to the kind of photography I have to do to pay the bills.

So that’s why I sit here in Mojave drinking 32 ounce cups of water non stop like I’ve never drank water before in my life, while hoping it cools down a little so I can get out of the house!

As it turns out I have lots of computer work that needs to be done so for the remainder of my stay here I have lots to do.

For the next few weeks I have a couple of home repair jobs to complete, then I’ll be traveling to St. Louis to photograph The YTBTravel National Convention that will happen the first week of August.

I didn’t mention the travel business I’m involved with, but I’ll get to that because it all fits together with everything else I do to “Make a life worth living while having a good time”.

Well, this is my first official post since I started this blog on June 30th–2008. Keep an eye out for other e-mails for more blogging.

If you’ve looked at some of the posts on this blog you’ll see quite a few blogs from my son Austin as he’s visiting from Atlanta this summer.

I thought it would be a good idea and good for his writing skills if he wrote about his experiences here this summer.

Until next time.

I’m Here in Mojave trying to stay cool.

The Heat Of A Thousand Suns

My dad and I are still in the Mojave Desert.

It’s so hot over here that the cable went out because the heat out here fried the cable box!

Today I went to ride my bike. I really thought that I knew what I was doing but I really didn’t. My dad had faith in me though and that  made me feel like I could accomplish anything so I rode off feeling extremely confident.

I also had to bring my stick just in case a dog tried to attack me or something. As soon as made my third turn every house I saw had a dog with a bad attitude. One little puppy dog somehow got through the cage and started to chase me. I tried to slow down so that I could hit it with my stick, but it stopped running before I got the chance. I stopped when I noticed that the dogs had stopped barking. I took one look around and I immediately said to myself,”I’m lost”! So I stopped to try and remember where I came from but I was having so much fun trying to hit that dog that I had forgotten all about those things. So,like any helpless kid, I called my dad and told him what street I was on.

A few minutes later I saw a bright light coming towards me. I thought  that  since the wind was blowing so hard it  threw me into the air and I landed on my head causing me to break my neck.

Although instead of heaven it was my dad, he had  found me after all!  He told me to follow him so I did and before I knew it, I was home. I was still a little stunned but my dad helped to console me back to my normal self again, and that was my view of today.

Journey To Mojave Desert

Filed under: Austin's Daily View — otisg @ 6:35 AM

Written on : 7/6/08 Today my dad and I planned to go to the Mojave Desert, but we had to wait until we got everything done in Inglewood.

First we went to church with the rest of  the family. I felt like my spirit had been touched by Jesus by the time we left. After that we packed up all of our clothes in preparation  for our road trip.

When that was done we said our goodbyes and drove off.

On the way I saw a “Wind Turbine”. It’s a giant spinning devise that gathers electricity by spinning. It’s almost like a solar  panel . Only it moves to get its energy. It’s said to be able to power a whole house. I also saw  a war plane on the way.

My dad said that they were able to go so fast  that they break the sound barrier when they take off which  is able to make houses shake like an Earthquake.  By then we had  already entered  Mojave Desert and we were just getting accustom to the weather.

In Mojave, it was as hot as the flaming pits off hell!  When we got into the house it felt great compared to the intense heat outside. There was air conditioning, great food, and something I haven’t seen in a long time…cable!   It was all so wonderful that I almost fainted.  So my dad and I ate outside. Then we took a walked in the dark. I got to bring my stick just in case a dog tried to bite us. I didn’t get to use it because the dogs stopped when they saw the stick.  After a while I got kind of scared but  I acted brave because my dad was shivering in his boots. When we finally got back, we kicked back and relaxed. All in all it was pretty cool.

Today  I  went  to  see the movie  ”Wall-E”.  It’s  a  movie  about  a  robot  that  is  left  behind  on          Earth  when  everyone  else  leaves.  After  that  I  went  to  a  birthday  party  and  it was  a  blast!

Everyone  there  was  having  a  good  time  including  me.  There was  a  room  for  the  adults  and  one  for  the  kids  so  that  we  could  watch  what   we  wanted  while  they  watched  what  they  wanted.  The  cake  and  ice  cream  were  excellent.  There  were  also  huge  cupcakes  that  were  the  size  of  my  head!  They  were  scrumptious  though!  The  icing  was  absolutely  divine.  Just like  the  rest  of  my  day.

The Agonizing Day

Today might have been the hardest day of my life.  I had to mow the yard and wash two cars! While I mowed the yard, I had to keep stopping because my dad kept telling me how to do everything when I already knew what to do. The lawn mower was kind of broken so that slowed me down too. All in all, the whole thing took about an hour and a half. After that my brother and I  washed a car. My sister didn’t have to lift a finger because she’s daddy’s little girl. I was really tired so I didn’t try that hard on the car. When we finally got done with the car, daddy made us wash another car ! The entire process was done without my sister and she still got rewarded. It took three whole hours!

Afterwards, we all went to see fireworks at our local park. They were spectacular! Each one went higher than the last. It was truly a sight to behold.

The million mile bike ride

Filed under: Austin's Daily View — otisg @ 8:42 PM

Today my dad and I went to the beach to ride our bikes . I wasn’t  accustomed to riding long distances but I thought that it wouldn’t matter . So while we were riding , somewhere around the first mile my legs started to hurt. My dad said that was supposed to happen so I rolled with it . A few minutes later I felt like I was awake while having surgery on my leg . When we were done my dad said that we rode about 5 miles. I was amazed that we only rode 5 miles! After all that agony I thought that we had at least rode 34 miles. My legs , butt,  and shoulders hurt like the flaming pits of hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
